Where to find the best pizza in Salt Lake City

A Litzas pizza fresh from the oven

Salt Lake City's pizza scene used to be sparse. A few neighborhood institutions, the chains, and the occasional newcomer who opened with great intentions and closed eighteen months later. Today it's better — there are a half-dozen credible Neapolitan places, a handful of slice shops, and at least three spots doing real Detroit-style.

That's a healthy thing. Better pizza is better for everyone. But somewhere in the conversation about wood-fired ovens and 00 flour and fermentation times, the actual question gets lost: where do you go when you want to feed four people something good for thirty bucks?

Hand-tossed beats trend-tossed

We've been doing the same hand-tossed style on 400 South since 1965. Medium-thickness crust. Pizza sauce we make in-house from a recipe Don Hale worked out at the kitchen table. Whole-milk mozzarella, never a blend. The Hires Big H seasoned ground beef on the meat pies comes from our sister restaurant, freshly butchered.

None of this was ever supposed to be a competitive advantage. It's just how Don decided to do it in 1965 and we never saw a reason to change. Sometimes the boring answer is also the right one.

What to order

If it's your first time, get a Litzas Meatza. It's pepperoni, ham, and our Italian sausage on the house pizza sauce — the most representative pizza we make. Pair it with a Garden Salad and a frosted-mug root beer. Total commitment to the format.

If you're feeding the kind of friend who needs something specific, the Mt Olympus (honey mustard, chicken, bacon, BBQ drizzle) wins people over fast. The Spinach Artichoke is the sleeper. Vegetarians do well with the Five Cheese.

Where to find us

Our original is on 400 South in downtown Salt Lake City — 716 East 400 South. We're open Wednesday through Saturday, 11am to 8pm. There's a private room in back that seats up to 40 people if you need to host something.

If you're south, we're in Midvale on Fort Union Boulevard, right off I-215. If you're west, we're in West Valley on 4700 South. Same recipes at all three.

Or just order online and we'll bring it to you.
